BioProS

Biointelligent Production Sensor to Measure Viral Activity

Our aim is to transform virus biomanufacturing processes and enable new quality control strategies by a continuous, real-time capable biohybrid sensor technology to detect cell-based virus infection cycles.

About the project

About us

Today, genome editing is almost as easy as programming software. However, the generation of viral vectors as initial material is still associated with many expensive and error-prone handling procedures. Viruses are generated via complex biological processes that have to be optimised virus-specifically in order to produce high-quality therapeutics. A new method is needed that simplifies and optimises these processes.

So on July 1, 2022 started the the European biointelligence project BioProS. It is funded in the framework of the Horizon Europe call “Digital and emerging technologies for competitiveness and fit for the green deal”.  The project duration will be 48 months and the consortium is consisting of seven partners from five countries: Fraunhofer IPA and Fraunhofer IGB, Germany, Politecnico di Milano, Italy, Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, Germany, NecstGen, the Netherlands, Elvesys, France, EurA AG, Germany and BICO Group AB, Sweden.

The project's targets

BioProS sensor concept makes use of an optical sensor technology in combination with cell-based measurement principles. In this context a platform technology will be developed that can be adapted to multiple specific analytes which enables its applicability in different industries and production settings.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon research and innovation program under HORIZON-CL4-2021-DIGITAL-EMERGING-01-27, grant agreement no. 101070120.

Gender equality refers to “the equal rights, responsibilities, and opportunities of women and
men and girls and boys”. This is a crucial prerequisite for societal sustainable development
and, as such, it concerns men, women, and other non-conforming gender-identifying persons
and thus can only be achieved with the direct engagement of persons across the entire gender
spectrum. This consortium is committed to promoting the rights and interests of all persons in
their professional and private life. The BioProS consortium strives to foster gender equality and
is dedicated to avoiding any discrimination within the project based on gender, religion, sexual
orientation, nationality, ethnicity, or otherwise. Thus, all involved participants within the
consortium will be provided with the same opportunities for development. Together, a strategy was developed that was structured to three main sections:

  • Analysis of Gender Disaggregated Data of Project Partners within the BioProS consortium

  • Actions and Targets

  • Monitoring
